Fall 2024 Workshop: Custom Bike Frame Bags

Interested in making your own custom frame bag? You’ve come to the right place! We’ve designed a two day workshop to teach you the basics of making your own bike frame bag. We’ll give you pointers on the design of your bag, teach you about laser cutting and dye sublimation and then show you how to put it all together with the sewing machines. The goal is for each participant to walk away with their own frame bag at the end of the weekend (and we’ll help you out if you don’t get all the way there!).
Availability: 6 in stock

Each participant will take home their own custom bike frame bag made to fit your bike, with your desired graphic pattern.  The workshop will go through the dye-sublimation printing process, laser cutting, heat pressing, and garment assembly using various equipment in the RDC Prototype Lab.

Fundraiser workshop proceeds directly support RDC Fabrication Labs student staff at the Nancy Richardson Design Center.

What will I learn?

For each step in the process of creating a Wompy Frame Bag, we will teach you a little bit about a technique or technology and then apply it to the construction of your bag.

We will cover:

      1. Frame Bag Features & Design
      2. Dye Sublimation (to create a unique fabric pattern)
      3. Laser Cutting (to cut out our fabric)
      4. Machine Sewing (to assemble our bags)

How much does it cost?

For Community Members, the workshop will cost $250 for the weekend.

For CSU Students, there is a discounted rate of $150.

This includes the instruction, access to the equipment and all the materials you need to build your bag.

How much can I customize my bag?

What we will be teaching is how to build Wompy Bag style of bag. There are a few differences to some of the other styles of bags out there.

You can choose to do any size of bag from a Wedge to a Half to a Full Frame bag.

The bag will consist of:

        • a main compartment (approx 1.5" thick) with a full length zipper
        • a custom pattern on the front and back of the bag
        • a thin map pocket on the opposite side
        • a lace up style of attachment to your bike

What type of experience do I need?

Over the span of the two days, we hope to be able to take you from very little experience to completing your own bag. We don't think this means you have any experience with any of the equipment beforehand (laser cutter, sewing machines, etc), but we think it is advicable to that you have some experience making things and working with your hands to make the most of the workshop.

If you fall a bit behind, we will work with you to make sure that you have a completed bag at the end of the course.

What do I need to prepare beforehand?

Before you show up on Saturday, we need you to:

      1. Take a picture of your bike. Stand about 10 feet away, get down level with the frame and try to take it as straight on as possible.
      2. Decide what pattern you want on your bag. You'll want to find a good, high quality photo of the pattern that you want on the outside of the bag.
      3. We'll have you submit both of these before we get started so we can hit the ground running when you show up. If you want to get ahead, feel free to check out the Wompy Design Software and start creating your bag.
      4. Though not mandatory, we encourage you to bring your bike to the workshop so that you can test out the fit as we go along and make sure it's coming together as planned.

There's certainly parking on campus, but we highly encourage you to bike to the workshop!
